The Royal Theatre
A flexible solution respecting the architecture
Today, The Royal Theatre has three stages: The Old Scene, The Opera, and Skuespilhuset. The history of the Theatre goes back more than 250 years and the past few decades have witnesses more changes than ever before.
In January 2005, The Opera, designed by Henning Larsen, opened, and in 2008, Skuespilhuset, designed by Boje Lundgaard and Lene Tranberg, was ready for theater goers on Kvæsthusbroen. The Old Scene from 1874 with its iconic structure is still located on Kongens Nytorv.
The challenge
Combing legislation and esthetics
In addition to the waste sorting statutory requirement pertaining to all public institutions, waste sorting was also part of the green strategy of The Royal Theatre. Hence, a solution was required that would ensure efficient and uniform handling of waste bins while at the same time being esthetically appropriate for all thee locations.
In addition, The Royal Theatre wanted a solution that would meet the daily needs of staff and employees as well as the needs of audiences in connection with events and performances.
From waste to resources
We wanted a waste solution that would fit right in with our decor without having to compromise on flexibility or functionality.

Minimalist and timeless waste sorting for The Opera in Copenhagen
The Opera is a quite amazing building with its own unique mode of expression. It called for a custom-made solution.
The white-painted waste solution is designed to blend in naturally with the decor/layout of The Opera without attracting unnecessary attention.
The solution
The Royal Theatre chose a solution fulfilling all needs
Following a market scrutiny process, The Royal Theatre opted for a Bica waste solution. Their solution consists of black and white modules with two or three fractions with corresponding black and white pictograms.
Flexibility was a decisive factor to accommodate for the varyings needs of the individual locations. Focus was also on the cleaning and service staff who handle the waste on a daily basis. The decision to get a white-painted waste sorting solution for The Opera was taken to ensure a design that would match the architecture and blend in naturally with the decor/layout.
From waste to resources
It was important to us that, esthetically, the waste solution would match the architecture while at the same making things as easy as possible for the cleaning staff.
